Happy 1st of March everybody! This month I want us to consider the way we look to people.
Let's consider for a moment: starch. What does that make you think of? Of corn starch, by which you make things thick? Of eating too much potatoes which makes you fat? Or of ironing a dress shirt, where it looks crisp and clean? But remember, if you get too much starch on your shirt it can look bad...like you are wearing a stiff straightjacket.
Are our faces stiff?
A few mornings ago in Chapel, the director of the Preaching School asked one of the students, "Are you happy?"
"Yeah, I good," he replied.
"Well, remember to talk to your face about it."
How often do we go around looking as if someone had died, when we are fine and happy inside? The people here have really made me think. They often start a prayer with "Lord, thank you for life, health, and strength..." If we can say that we have life, health, and strength, then why aren't we smiling?
Are you alive? You're reading this, so I would assume that you are.
Are you healthy? If you're in the hospital dying from cancer or a disease, I guess that would mean you're not healthy. But I knew a dear person who was smiling to the last even though she died of cancer.
Do you have strength? Get up, run around the house, get a drink, make some food for yourself, pick up something heavy to put away...yeah, you've got strength!
So this is my encouragement today: If you have life, health, and strength, if you are happy, tell your face about it! Put a smile on your face! For real! :)
Have a wonderful day! Remember, don't let your face look like starch! :)
"I'm happy today, oh yes I'm happy today,
In Jesus Christ I'm happy today,
Because He's taken all my sins away,
And that's why I'm happy today."
